Established in 2010, the Matlahuayl State Marine Reserve is a marine protected area that encompasses nearly 13,000 acres of underwater habitat. This reserve is located within the larger La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve and is dedicated to protecting the area\’s rich biodiversity, including a variety of fish, kelp forests, and invertebrates.
Surfing in La Jolla Shores dates back to the early 1900s, when Hawaiian-born surfer and Olympic swimmer George Freeth first introduced the sport to Southern California. By the 1930s, La Jolla Shores was already gaining popularity among local surfers, and in the 1960s, it transformed into a legendary hotspot for the sport during the Golden Age of Surfing. With a history deeply rooted in surf culture, La Jolla Shores has been and continues to be the perfect location for surf lessons in San Diego.
