Surf Camp FAQs
Where is Surf Education Academy’s surf camp located in San Diego?
Surf Education Academy’s surf camps take place at La Jolla Shores Beach in San Diego, California, one of Southern California’s safest and most beginner-friendly surf beaches. The area features gentle rolling waves, a sandy bottom, lifeguard coverage, and easy beach access — making it ideal for kids learning to surf and build ocean confidence.
Are there half or full day options?
Yes, half day hours for AM camp runs from 8:30am-12pm or our PM camp goes from 12:30pm – 4:30pm. Our full day surf camps will mix the AM and PM camps. Full day surfing is the best way to have the best summer ever at La Jolla Shores Beach in San Diego, California.
What should my child bring to surf camp?
We like to say bring what you would to a normal beach day. Beach bag or backpack, towel, sunscreen, water -reusable bottle, healthy snacks, extra beach clothes, hat, and any extra beach accessories specific to the surfer.
Campers should bring:
- Swimsuit or rash guard
- Towel and change of clothes
- Sunscreen (reef-safe preferred)
- Water bottle
- Snack or lunch (depending on session length)
- Positive attitude and excitement
Surfboards and wetsuits are provided.
Is your surf camp safe for beginners and nervous swimmers?
Yes. Safety is our top priority. Our instructors are trained in ocean safety, CPR, first aid, and youth instruction. We use soft-top surfboards, maintain small group ratios, and carefully select surf zones based on daily ocean conditions. Beginners receive extra hands-on support to build confidence in a calm and encouraging environment.
Where is the best place to park?
There a few options for parking, but during weekends and peak seasons it can get crowded, so we recommend providing ample time for parking your car. Option 1 is the La Jolla Shores Beach Parking lot. Option 2 is street parking (be sure and check the signs for 2 hour limits, street sweeping, etc.).
*SEA Local’s Tip: The main beach parking lot can be crowded during summer and weekends and you can get stuck in the lot behind people waiting for spots. If the main beach parking lot looks crowded we suggest looking for street parking. If you don’t find a close parking spot in your first pass we recommend parking up the street a bit (across La Jolla Shores Dr.); it may seem farther, but it is really only a few minutes walk, a fraction of the time you could spend stuck in the lot or looking for a spot on the street right up front.

What does a typical day at surf camp look like?
Each day includes a mix of:
- Beach warm-ups and safety briefings
- Surf instruction and assisted wave riding

How experienced are your surf instructors?
All Surf Education Academy instructors are experienced surfers and trained youth coaches with certifications in CPR, first aid, and ocean safety. Many are long-time local surfers who understand La Jolla’s ocean conditions and specialize in teaching kids.
What happens if ocean conditions are not safe for surfing?
Safety always comes first. If surf or weather conditions are unsuitable, we modify activities to include beach games, ocean education, environmental projects, sand skills, balance drills, or sheltered water activities until conditions improve.
What if it rains?
We are going to get wet anyways! All sessions will run as scheduled unless canceled by SEA, and SEA will only cancel sessions if the Lifeguards or the City close the beach due to high bacteria levels, excessive pollution or other safety concerns. With that said, there is always a general water quality advisory in effect for 72 hours after significant rain spells, so entering the ocean is up to each individual. SEA will not issue refunds or credit for sessions that are not canceled by SEA. Please check the weather forecast before booking if you are concerned about rain or water quality.
Are campers grouped by age or skill level?
Yes. Campers are grouped by age and ability to ensure safety, comfort, and appropriate coaching progression. This allows beginners to feel supported while more experienced surfers continue advancing.
What are the cancellation policies?
Please Check
Can my child attend multiple weeks of surf camp?
Absolutely. Many families enroll for multiple weeks to help their child build consistency, confidence, and skill progression. Returning campers often move into higher-level groups as their skills improve.
What ages can attend your surf camps?
We offer surf camp programs for children ages 5–15, with tiered programs designed by age and ability:
- Mini Groms (Ages 5–7) – First-time surfers and younger kids
- Groms (Ages 8–10) – Skill-building and confidence development
- SEA Explorers (Ages 8–13) – Ocean education + adventure
- Future Legends (Ages 11–15) – Advanced progression and performance coaching
This structure ensures every camper receives age-appropriate instruction and supervision.
How do I reserve a spot in surf camp?
Spots can be reserved directly through our online booking system. We recommend booking early during peak summer weeks, as enrollment is limited to maintain safe group sizes.
Do you offer half-day, full-day, or afternoon programs?
Yes. We offer morning surf camps, afternoon enrichment programs like SEA Explorers Camp, and flexible options that allow families to build full-day experiences.
Do you work with visiting families and vacation travelers?
Yes. Many of our campers are visiting families staying in La Jolla, San Diego, and nearby beach communities. Our location is close to hotels, parking, restaurants, and restrooms — making drop-off and pick-up easy for travelers.

Why Choose Surf Education Academy For Surf Camp Services
At Surf Education Academy, our surf camp experience goes beyond simply learning to ride waves. We’ve built our reputation on a foundation of expert instruction, years of ocean safety education, and a genuinely supportive teaching culture that transforms beginners into confident surfers. Our team members aren’t just skilled surfers – they’re experienced educators passionate about sharing ocean knowledge and safety practices that will serve you for life.
What truly sets Surf Education Academy apart is our comprehensive approach to surf instruction. Unlike camps with overcrowded lessons where instructors struggle to provide personal attention, we maintain a maximum 5:1 student-to-instructor ratio. This ensures you receive personalized coaching, immediate feedback, and the support needed to progress at your own pace. Each of our instructors holds International Surfing Association (ISA) certifications and current surf rescue qualifications, creating the safest environment for your surf journey.
Ocean safety awareness forms the core of everything we teach at our surf camps. Before you even touch a surfboard, you’ll learn essential ocean knowledge – from understanding rip currents and wave formation to proper surf etiquette. This foundational education creates more confident, prepared surfers who understand the environment they’re entering. When surfing with Surf Education Academy, you’re not just learning a new skill; you’re gaining ocean confidence that lasts a lifetime.
Our teaching philosophy emphasizes creating a supportive, fun learning environment where mistakes are viewed as valuable learning opportunities. We understand that many people feel intimidated by the ocean or worry about “looking silly” while learning. Our team works hard to build an encouraging community where everyone feels welcome, regardless of age or ability level. This positive atmosphere accelerates learning and makes the entire surf camp experience more enjoyable for everyone.
With decades of combined teaching experience, our surf camp team has refined teaching methods that work for students of all ages. We break down surfing into manageable steps, building skills progressively to ensure solid fundamentals before advancing to more challenging techniques. This methodical approach means you’ll develop proper technique from day one, avoiding bad habits that could hinder your progress.
Join our surf camp team for unmatched expert lessons and a safe surfing journey that will change how you experience the ocean forever.
Beginner Surf Camps: Building Confidence and Safety from Day One
Stepping into the ocean for your first surf lesson can be both exciting and intimidating. Our beginner surf camps at Surf Education Academy are specifically designed to transform that initial nervousness into confidence through structured learning and comprehensive ocean safety education. From your very first day, we focus on creating a foundational understanding of surfing basics in an environment where everyone feels welcome and supported.
What makes our beginner camps exceptional is our systematic approach to skill development. Rather than rushing you into the water, we begin with essential beach-based instruction. You’ll master the perfect pop-up technique on land, understand proper positioning on the board, and learn the fundamentals of wave selection before ever paddling out. This methodical approach ensures you develop proper form from the beginning, setting you up for faster progression once you hit the water.
Ocean safety education is integrated into every aspect of our beginner surf camps. You’ll learn to identify safe entry and exit points, understand how to read ocean conditions, recognize rip currents, and practice proper surfing etiquette. This knowledge builds confidence that goes far beyond just standing on a board – it creates surfers who understand and respect the ocean environment. With a student-to-instructor ratio never exceeding 5:1, you’ll always have an expert nearby to ensure your safety and provide immediate feedback.
Our beginner camps utilize high-quality, beginner-friendly equipment specifically designed to maximize your learning experience. We provide soft-top boards with extra volume and stability, making those first waves significantly easier to catch and ride. Unlike camps that use worn-out “foamies of shame,” our well-maintained equipment helps you progress faster while ensuring your safety in the water. The right board makes all the difference when learning to surf, and we’ve invested in the best gear for beginners.
Understanding that everyone learns differently, our instructors are trained to adapt their teaching methods to suit your individual learning style. Some students are visual learners, others learn by detailed explanation, and many learn best through physical guidance. Our team identifies how you learn best and tailors their instruction accordingly. This personalized approach, combined with our supportive group environment, creates the perfect conditions for rapid improvement.
Many students arrive at our beginner camps worried about their fitness level or swimming ability. We carefully assess each participant’s comfort in the water and design appropriate challenges that build confidence without overwhelming. Our beginner sessions focus on waist-deep water initially, progressing to deeper water only when you’re ready. This gradual approach ensures everyone can enjoy the thrill of catching their first wave in a safe, controlled environment.
Start your surfing adventure safely with our expert beginner lessons that will have you standing up and riding waves sooner than you ever imagined possible.
Intermediate & Advanced Surf Camps: Elevate Your Surfing Skills and Ocean Awareness
Once you’ve mastered the fundamentals of surfing, our intermediate and advanced surf camps offer the perfect opportunity to refine your technique, develop style, and deepen your ocean knowledge. These specialized programs are designed for surfers who can consistently catch waves, perform basic turns, and want to progress to the next level of performance and understanding. With focused coaching from our expert team, you’ll break through plateaus and discover new dimensions of surfing.
What differentiates our advanced coaching is our comprehensive video analysis sessions. After each surf, our instructors capture your wave riding on video, then provide detailed feedback in evening review sessions. This powerful visual learning tool allows you to see exactly what’s happening in your technique – from paddle positioning to weight distribution during turns. Being able to visualize your surfing creates breakthroughs that would take significantly longer to achieve through verbal instruction alone.
For intermediate surfers, wave selection and positioning are often the biggest hurdles to improvement. Our advanced camps focus heavily on these aspects, teaching you to read wave formations, identify the optimal take-off spot, and understand how different breaks work. You’ll learn to recognize which waves have the best potential and how to position yourself to catch them. This strategic approach to surfing will dramatically increase your wave count and the quality of rides in any session.
Ocean awareness takes on new dimensions in our advanced programs. Beyond basic safety, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of oceanography – learning how swell direction, period, tides, and local geography affect wave conditions. This knowledge transforms you from someone who simply checks surf reports to someone who can predict and understand changing conditions. We’ll teach you to analyze offshore weather patterns and how they translate to local wave formations, empowering you to find the best surf anywhere you travel.
Our advanced surf camps integrate technique-specific workshops focused on maneuvers like bottom turns, cutbacks, generating speed, and for those ready, more progressive moves. Each workshop breaks down the mechanics of these maneuvers, using a combination of land-based drills and in-water practice. Our instructors demonstrate each technique, then work with you one-on-one to adapt it to your specific style and ability level. This focused approach accelerates your progression far beyond what you could achieve through casual surfing.
For those with competitive aspirations, our advanced camps include elements of competitive strategy and heat management. You’ll learn how to maximize scoring potential, priority rules, and mental preparation techniques used by professional surfers. Even if competition isn’t your goal, these strategies improve your overall surfing experience by helping you make the most of every session. Our coaches have extensive competitive backgrounds and share insights that only come from years of experience.
Take your surfing to the next level with personalized coaching that addresses your specific goals and unlocks your full potential in the water.

This ensures you receive personalized guidance while enjoying the camaraderie that comes from shared experiences in the waves. Many surfers find the group dynamic motivating, as you can learn not only from your instructor but also through observing fellow participants.

Ocean Safety Workshops: Learn Critical Skills for Confident Surfing
Essential Knowledge for Confident Navigation
Safety forms the cornerstone of every program at Surf Education Academy. Our specialized ocean safety workshops equip you with essential knowledge and practical skills to navigate La Jolla’s dynamic marine environment with confidence and respect.
Understanding Ocean Dynamics
These workshops begin with understanding ocean dynamics: learning to read wave patterns, identify rip currents, and recognize changing conditions before entering the water. Using visual guides and real-time beach assessments, our instructors teach you to spot potential hazards that even experienced surfers sometimes miss. This foundational knowledge transforms intimidating ocean conditions into readable, manageable scenarios.
Practical Emergency Skills
Practical emergency skills form the second component of our safety curriculum. Through in-water drills, you’ll practice effective paddling techniques for escaping rip currents, methods for assisting fellow surfers in distress, and self-rescue strategies for equipment failures. These hands-on exercises build muscle memory that activates automatically when needed most.
Critical Communication
Communication is equally critical for ocean safety. Our workshops cover universal surfer hand signals, effective ways to alert lifeguards to emergencies, and strategies for communicating with your surf group in noisy wave conditions. These communication protocols ensure you can both seek and provide help effectively.
Comprehensive Safety Guide
Each participant receives a comprehensive ocean safety guide customized to La Jolla’s unique coastal environments, serving as an ongoing reference after your time with us. By integrating these workshops into our surf programs, we ensure that every student develops the awareness and practical skills needed to become a confident, safety-conscious surfer for life.
Cultural Immersion and Environmental Stewardship Activities
Deeper, Meaningful Surf Experience
La Jolla’s rich surfing heritage offers profound lessons that extend far beyond technical wave-riding skills. At Surf Education Academy, we weave cultural education and environmental responsibility throughout our programs, creating a deeper, more meaningful surf experience.
Traditional Surf Culture
Traditional surf culture emphasizes a spiritual connection to the ocean, viewing waves as gifts rather than conquests. Our cultural immersion activities include sessions with local elders who share stories of La Jolla’s surfing pioneers, explaining how ancient s crafted their boards and read ocean patterns through generations of accumulated knowledge. These perspectives transform how you approach each wave, fostering gratitude and respect where ego and competition might otherwise dominate.
Environmental Workshops and Conservation
Environmental workshops complement this cultural foundation by highlighting our responsibility as ocean users. Through guided reef walks with marine biologists, you’ll learn to identify native species and understand the delicate ecosystem that creates perfect breaks. Hands-on conservation activities, from beach clean-ups to native plant restoration, allow you to give back to the beaches that provide our playground.
Integrated Approach to Stewardship
The connection between cultural values and environmental practices becomes evident as you discover how traditional concepts like “malama ʻāina” (caring for the land) established sustainable practices long before modern conservation efforts. This integrated approach helps you develop not just as a surfer, but as a steward of the ocean.
Transformative Camp Aspects
Many participants report that these cultural and environmental elements become the most transformative aspects of their surf camp experience, permanently changing their relationship with the ocean and inspiring ongoing conservation efforts in their home communities.
